They“re excellent, but not backlit sadly. There are a bunch of great games for the system and the NGPC has got THE best analog thumbpad of any handheld.

Great gaming experiences for me include the two excellent Metal Slug games, Sonic the Hedgehog (way better than those on any Gameboy), Neo Turf Masters (great golf game), Samurai Spirits 2, and Shanghai Mini.

Mine sees a lot of action. smile.gif

I really like mine. Great games.

Are you sure it's analog? it's awful microswitch-clicky and I've not got any games for mine that respond to analog input?

I think it's a digital pad made to resemble an analog one.

Yes, but at the time it came out the Gameboy didn't. Plus you get like 40-50 hours off 2 AA batteries.

I've wanted one for a while now, but I just never have had the opportunity to snag one. Then again, if anybody wants to trade a spare unit for some Xbox games or something, send me a PM... tongue.gif

I think its a great little system with a bunch of quality games. I've played mine regularly the last few years and I always forget exactly when I changed the batteries last in the thing because I only have to do it once or twice a year.

Neo Geo Pocket Color is, in short, awesome! The system should have done much better than it did. Hell, you can't get the Back Light for it? Buy a Worm Light, it works just fine, that's what I am going to do man!

This system has a lot of fun games. Highly recommended.

Yeah, and what is even more cool is the fact that it is dirt cheap to boot for real quality games. I innitially got mine for like $70.00 brand new with seven games new, that was a steal!

The NGPC is a great system. It is not backlit but you can hack it and have a brighter image. I have one and t changes everything smile.gif

They're great, but they do have a few problems. The back light is, most definitely, the major thing that I feel is missing from the system. I'd recommend staying away from the black and white version, too, as the dpad doesn't seem as responsive as the color system.

That's true; however, the NGPC has the best non-backlit screen I've ever seen. The games are great, too. smile.gif

Great little system that I believe can still be had pretty cheap (although I haven't checked in forever). smile.gif

$85 dollars for a Neo Geo Pocket Color with a pre-installed front-light setup. Apparantly, you can also send in your system to have them install the front-lighting for $60 dollars. Pretty pricey, if you ask me, but it would be awesome for a NGPC to have built-in lighting.

Wouldn't picking one of these up sometime.

The Neo Geo Pocket had the best non-backlit screen I've ever seen though. All of the other systems I've ever had, I had to tilt the system towards a light source in order to see the screen. The NGPC screen seemed to absorb light.

I love my NGPC.. I'm just pissed that SNK of America withdrew from the market and killed my NGPC fun back in the day.. it had the best fighting games on any portable during it's reign. Beast Buster 2001 is still an awesome game by todays standards.

i sold mine and i regretted it.

I now have a game boy micro which i personally think is alot better. but i do miss sonic pocket adventure and metal slug sad.gif and that clicking sound of that controls.

man it was a awesome machine. If you can get it. BUY IT. you will not regret it smile.gif

Woohoo!

I just won a Neo Geo Pocket Color (blue camoflage) with Sonic Pocket Adventure, Metal Slug (1st Mission, unfortunately) and The King of Fighters R2 for only £8.27 plus £5 shipping. biggrin.gif

I also want to pick up a PSU and the Dreamcast link-up cable plus the necessary games to take advantage of it.

Perhaps I've become a little obsessed with retro hand helds recently what with also purchasing a Sega Nomad and a Bandai SwanCrystal in the past fortnight. smile.gif

EDIT: Just won the following titles via ebay,
Card Fighters Clash - Capcom version
Card Fighters Clash - SNK version
Falslei!
Fatal Fury
Gals Fighters
Neo Turf Masters
Pac-Man
Puzzle Link
Puzzle Link 2
Samurai Shodown! 2
The Last Blade

Would anyone recommend any other games (apart from RPGs which I loathe) that are worth picking up too?
MajorHavoc 2049
Metal Slug: 1st Mission and Metal Slug: 2nd Mission are both excellent games. The Match of the Millennium: SNK vs Capcom is considered by many to be the best fighting game on the NGPC.

As I said, I've bought Metal Slug: 1st Mission and I'm relieved to hear you think its still a quality game. I made the negative remark due to having read certain control issues were fixed for Metal Slug: 2nd Mission.

Ebay here I come for SNK vs. Capcom: The Match of the Millennium! pray.gif

I've noticed that game widely available on ebay so I'll try Googling it to find out more about it. cobracon.gif

Regarding SNK vs. Capcom: The Match of the Millennium, I've only seen it once so far on ebay and its listed at a high Buy it Now price so I'll be patient.

In the post so far I've received eleven of the games listed above and the PSU. However, the console itself hasn't arrived yet! leearco.gif laugh.gif
DreamcastRIP
Woohoo, my NGPC has arrived and with it the rest of the games listed above. rocker.gif

Just had a quick go on Metal Slug 1st Mission and Sonic Pocket Adventure and I'm impressed.

Similar to WonderSwan, its a shame it isn't backlit but its not that big a deal.

The seller even left batteries inside. smile.gif

All I need now is the Dreamcast/NGPC linkup cable and the requisite games. These cables don't seem too widely available in the time I've spent checking ebay so far. I was outbid on one recently as I wasn't willing to make further bids given the high price it had reached. My Dreamcast will get to mate with NGPC one day soon I hope! laugh.gif

Well, been awhile since I've been by. Truthfully, I love the NGPC. You do need to get one of those do it yourself back light kits or even the worm light if you can find one. The coolest thing on the worm light also is that it acts as a rechargeable batery pack for the system and the AC adapter works on the unit itself also. Very nice and I see them from time to time on ebay through the Slackers store. They are deacent people, especially looking at the reacent ebay crowd. Oh, and since you have a NGPC, I reccomend Last Blade, very well done on the system and will really make you wonder where gamers heads were not buying this system over the GBC.

I love my neo jeo pocket! Match of the millenium has to be one of the best fighting games ever on a handheld. I don't play it much now, but it is really fun!

I still need to get my hands on a front lit system badly. I love the Neo Geo Pocket, but my eyes going isn't helping things these days.

I really want to own that game but every time I see it come up on ebay.co.uk its always around the £30 mark which I personally consider too much for a NGPC game. Maybe one day I'll drop lucky and snag it for a more reasonable price.

There's a certain double standard with my assertion as I recently bid approximately £70 for Judgement Silversword for WonderSwan, but that is a much rarer title in fairness. smile.gif

Woohoo! I've FINALLY snagged a boxed copy of SNK vs. Capcom - The Match of the Millenium for a half-decent price. Can't wait to play this game after having read so many good things about it both here at JS-II and elsewhere on the 'net. smile.gif

Just won via ebay: Cool Cool Jam (BNIB), Metal Slug 2nd Mission and Puzzle Bobble Mini.

So that means I've now got Cool Cool Jam (NGPC) and Cool Cool Toon (DC) but still can't source the damn NGPC-DC link-up cable for an anywhere near reasonable price. leearco.gif

NGPC collection now consists of:
Card Fighters Clash - Capcom version, Card Fighters Clash - SNK version, Cool Cool Jam, Falslei!, Fatal Fury, Gals Fighters, King of Fighters R2, Metal Slug 1st Mission, Metal Slug 2nd Mission, Neo Turf Masters, Pac-Man, Puzzle Bobble Mini, Puzzle Link, Puzzle Link 2, Samurai Shodown! 2, SNK vs. Capcom - The Match of the Millennium, Sonic Pocket Adventure, The Last Blade

I have always wanted one, are they as good as I hear?
DreamcastRIP
Well all I can say is that I like it. Its definitely an improvement on GameBoy Color imo, has a small but generally high quality selection of region-free games which are available quite cheaply in the main and the clicky mini-joystick is a revelation. Definitely worth picking one up as you'll get one off eBay cheaply if you're patient and sellers frequently offer bundles of games for very affordable prices. Its definitely not just a curio in the way that some consider the Nintendo Virtual Boy and Bandai WonderSwan to be (although I love both those systems too). smile.gif

I'm just hacked off at the prices and shipping costs from the US for the Dreamcast link-up cable... sad.gif
DreamcastRIP
Just snagged Densha de Go! 2 (CIB).

My full NGP/NGPC collection now comprises of one NGPC unit with the following games:
Card Fighters Clash - Capcom version, Card Fighters Clash - SNK version, Cool Cool Jam, Densha de Go! 2, Falslei!, Fatal Fury, Gals Fighters, King of Fighters R2, Metal Slug 1st Mission, Metal Slug 2nd Mission, Neo Turf Masters, Pac-Man, Pocket Tennis Color, Puzzle Bobble Mini, Puzzle Link, Puzzle Link 2, Samurai Shodown! 2, SNK vs. Capcom - The Match of the Millennium, Sonic Pocket Adventure and The Last Blade...

... plus a NGP/NGPC-to-Dreamcast link-up cable (CIB). smile.gif
tomwaits
All of the Densha de Go! games are train simulators, right? Is there an arcade style appeal or are they straight sims? Are they playable in English?

The NGPC is great. I've become a little obsessed with the Neo Geo MVS since my PS3 died... might be time to revisit some portable SNK gaming too.
DreamcastRIP
Yep, they're all train-driving sims with no intrinsic arcade-style appeal. I've iterations of the game for Saturn, Dreamcast, WonderSwan and NGPC. I've even picked up via eBay the near-mint CIB controllers for Saturn and Dreamcast. They're all in Japanese language which is obviously a bit of a pain when trying to work out what to do in the menus but its not an insurmountable challenge given a little trial and error. There are thankfully fan-created websites which provide instruction on what the games' menus mean in English language. smile.gif

I've also picked up Railfan: Taiwan High Speed Rail (PS3) which is essentially the rebranded modern-day version of the long-standing franchise. Should you be tempted to snag this PS3 release (graphics are absolutely jaw-dropping) then be sure to get the non-Japanese-only iteration (the Asia version iirc) as it includes the option of selecting from either Japanese or English language menus. Its definitely the one to go for if you've a passing interest in the franchise but have concerns over the language barrier. My advice would be to search around on the internets a fair bit when attempting to source the game as several sites are well aware of its special-interest value to the Western audience and grossly inflate its price. Its not a massively rare game so given a little searching and/or patience you should find it for a reasonable price. smile.gif

Tbh though, I only really snagged the Dreamcast version initially due to having first acquired the proprietary controller at a bargain price as a curio purchase. The same goes for my having acquired the Saturn version. I've no keen interest or hobby in relation to trains, just an arguably unhealthy interest in acquiring import-only video gaming paraphernalia of niche and/or curio value. captainzoli.gif laugh.gif
DreamcastRIP
Finally managed to snag Pac-Man (CIB UK clamshell version). smile.gif

Includes:
* Clamshell case with cart in protective case
* Three game instruction manuals, orange warning leaflet and the smaller yellow slip
* Two crossrings (still sealed)
