I am now trying to get my Jag Dev - Alpine system up and running. Iīd like to use an older Pentium II 266 MHz PC with Windows 98SE. I have heard that it can somehow be difficult to get the Alpine system set up properly.

Who knows which BIOS settings for the parallel port of my PC is the one I need?

My BIOS offers a couple of options and I donīt know which one I should chose. I have Standard (which does not work as itīs uni-directional), Bi-directional, ECP and EPP.

Using Bi-directional (following Atariīs requirement as per Alpine setup instructions) getīs me further and when starting WDB it will find the Alpine properly, as you can see in this screenshot:

Loading a file into the Alpine RAM seems to work fine at the beginning of the uploading process:

After a short while during the upload an error message appears, see the error line with white background:

When I hit the reset button on my Alpine the following error message apears (with white background):

Is anyone here who has already seen these kind of error messages and knows whatīs wrong with my setup?

Thanks, guys.

try using the pprot setting from inside wdb.

do something like

pprot = 1

then try your load of painter

If it still fails try

pprot = 2

and try again

keep incrementing pprot by 1 each time until it works

Once you find a reliable pprot setting add the pprot = WHATEVER # WORKS into your rdb.ini file in you \jaguar\bin directory. This will set pprot to that value everytime you use rdbjag and wdb

Thank you very much, I will try these settings.

What is the "pprot" setting good for, i.e. what does it do to WDB?

It is basically a "speed" setting for how fast to try communicating with the Alpine.

I am not around my dev system or manuals now, but I believe the higher the number the slower it sends data.

If you have a dev manual, you can look up more detail on it.

This is a delay control I belive - Belboz is right there is around half page about it in dev manual but you have to look for it hard. I've skipped it few times until Starcat pointed out this option when I had problems with my dev system.

BINGO (as we say here), I have got my Alpine working properly!!

Your suggestions with respect to the pprot function were exactly right rocker.gif

I came to the conclusuion that pprot = 4 works fine and I was able to upload a couple of demos (e.g. ces_demo and jagmand) and get them up and running on my Devjag. I could also upload Painter without error messages, but it wonīt run yet - need to do some research on that.

You said that the determinded value should be added into my rdb.ini file. I donīt have such a file, but I do have a file called "rdb.rc" which I could open with a text editor. The last line of this file was set to "pprot = 0" and I edited it to "pprot = 4" which works fine after restarting WDB.

Is "rdb.rc" the file your were talking about, or do I have to have a "rdb.ini" files as well?

Well, I am not aware of that page and I think I have searched all of my printed pages of the dev manual. It might be in there and I may have overseen it, but chances are that my manual might not be complete.

Can you possibly point me to that page you are talking about, please?

It would help me to check if my manual is somehow complete.... blush.gif

In the meantime I was also able to run an uploaded Painter. dry.gif

While it wonīt start on my DevJag when booted from scratch with button B pushed, it will start from inside WDB using the "go" command right after uploading it. Donīt know why it wonīt start when using the Alpine as cartridge subsitution, as the other demos I uploaded worked also with the "button B method".

Can it be that the reason is that Painter.cof has a start address at $10000, while the other demos load to $802000?? Sounds somehow logical but I donīt know for sure if thatīs really the reason.

Does anyone else know?

Hi, I have a Debugger manual, dated 93/11/15. It is organized in chapters, the page numbers have the following format 1-1, 1-2, etc. 2-1, etc. 3-1 etc. None of the chapters has 40 or more pages. Are you referring to page 40 of the total of 84 pages? For me it is page 4-21 but it is talking about "global", "local" and "goto". I also did a search for "pprot" or "prot" in Acrobat, but this word does not seem to exist in the whole DB document.

I'd like more information on this too since I have a November 1994 manual and don't see it in there.
