So, was this version of Commando any good? I know that it is one of my all time favorite games from the arcade, and I may end up looking for it if the game is indeed a good version. I hope that it is better than the NES version, which really was a let down for me.

I haven't played the NES version but Commando is one of my favorites on the 7800. I should load it up to give a proper review. What things didn't you like about the NES?

The thing is that it sounds like shit, and it looks like hell on the NES. Everytime I go to see screen shots on the game, it's the same damn one, the soldier jumping out of the helicopter in the field where it starts the game! sad.gif

Hell can look pretty cool if it's done right. If you could be more specific, I could try to answer your questions. happy.gif

I always enjoyed the C-64 version of this game, but I don't think I've played the 7800 version.

Okay, I will put it this way, Commando on the NES has that "Plain" look that alot odf the NES games have. There is ton's of detail missing in the graphics and it has that nasty carousel sound to the music. It really is bad.

I would buy the PAL cart dude, but I am an NTSC guy, ya' know?

I just found some screenshots of NES Commando and even if they were taken in an emulator (I've seen the 7800 version in emu and real), the 7800 crushes it graphically. Here's a link:

http://www.consoleclassix.com/gameinfo_commando_nes.html

However according to this reviewer, the NES version looks and plays better than the 7800.

http://www.videogamecritic.net/nesce.htm

I would really like to do a website that does comparison reviews and videos of similar games on different platforms.

It appears the NES version was by CAPCOM USA and the 7800 was by Data East USA. are they the same company because the copyright is the same...

http://atari7800.org/screenshots/Commandoscreen.htm

I prefer the 7800 select screen, graphically. There is no continue on the 7800, but I doubt that's really a detractor.

That second review in Shaggy's post says the flicker can be excessive on the NES. I don't remember flicker on the 7800 version. If there is any, I doubt it is excessive.

Thanks for posting the link to the 7800 shots, I forgot to do that. The 7800 version has no flicker at all. Personally I find flicker in higher end 8-bit games to be quite annoying so the 7800 version has to get points right there.

Just so we can be on the same page here, here is the NES title screen:

I believe Data East handled the US license. They did for many other games too such as Double Dragon. The NES version remember was Japanese in origin.

There is NO flicker on the 7800 version. As for the NES version . . . . . . . . . dry.gif

and the 7800 title screen. Sure the title screen doesn't mean anything to the game, but it shows that they seemed to take more time on the 7800 version, cobracon.gif
