I remember when Internet Killed the Video Star first came out in 2000, I thought "that's a cute parody, but that will never happen". Now, MTV doesn't play music videos any more while YouTube is full of music videos, and even makes successes out of some of the indie bands who post their videos on the site!
Then, when the first tv broadcasts started coming out I thought that the internet would always be a poor way to watch television shows, and now I'm thinking about canceling my cable and just watching the shows I like through Hulu. I'm getting the same feeling of "that will never happen" when I hear people talk about how most new entertainment will be interactive in the future. I can't help but wonder if I'm underestimating technology again. -------------------- |

Im not sold on all the 3D movie crap they force on you at the movie theaters ad now they have TV'S and Bluray players coming out with it built in.
This is one technology I hope doest take off like the internet Hulu is awsome coupled with XBMC via the Playon plugin system. Who needs cable with Netflix, Hulu, Amzon on demand, and so many more streaming through XBMC. Hell they even have a plug in for DramaFever.com my wife is obsessed with that one.. -------------------- My video games are my family, just don't tell the wife

I'm not sold on 3D, either. First off, I wear glasses, and the idea of having to buy another pair of glasses (possibly even prescription ones, in my case) to watch movies and whatnot just strikes me as fucking dumb. Secondly, I don't feel that everything lends itself very well to 3D. I mean, with constant advances in gaming, the need for imagination is simply dying. Can people simply not perceive where things are in relation to other things without having gimmicky technology doing the work for them?

I think 3D is awesome in movies as long as it is used well...

Yeah, I feel the same way about 3D glasses. 3D glasses have been around for a looong time. Heck, even the Jaguar had a similar form of 3D 15 years ago. And the types of shutter glasses being pushed with new TVs have been around for 12 years, with shuttered 3D gaming available on PCs at least that long. Despite being cheap and ready to go for a decade, it hasn't taken off yet. I think it's just a once-in-a-while thing. I can see people putting on glasses for the occasional blockbuster movie, but wearing them all the time? It seems far fetched. Eye strain and headaches are very common with shutter or polarized technology. By common, I mean the MAJORITY of users experience some kind of side effects after a couple hours of exposure. Few people are going to wear the glasses for an 8 hour weekend gaming marathon if the technology is making them puke. I don't think 3D is dead. But I think the technology needs to improve quite a bit to be free of side effects (and probably glasses). That's still years away. - KS This post has been edited by kskunk: Mar 16 2010, 09:16 AM |

It'll be interesting to see whether the upcoming Nintendo 3DS is any good or whether it'll be considered "Virtual Boy 2".

VirtualBoy only has around fourteen games, yet its good game to bad game ratio is still lacking. XD -------------------- [ Web | kevinski.com ] [ Xbox Live | kevinski com ]

That whole "good game to bad game ratio" general school of thinking has never quite convinced me, e.g. Atari 2600 was swamped with mediocre games but look how loved that console still rightly is. I swear you've changed for the worse ever since you bought that Xbox 360! -------------------- Own: Jaguar/Jaguar CD/Lynx/Lynx II/7800/Dreamcast/Saturn/Mega Drive II/Mega-CD II/32X/Nomad/Game Gear/PS3/PlayStation/PSP/Wii/GameCube & GB Player/N64/DS Lite/Virtual Boy/GBm/GBA/GBC/GBP/GB/Xbox/Vectrex/CD-i/3DO/Amiga CD32/PC Engine Duo-R/WonderSwan/Neo Geo Pocket Color/Amstrad GX4000/Gizmondo/ColecoVision/iPhone

I swear you've changed for the worse ever since you bought that Xbox 360! If VirtualBoy had more games, then the ratio wouldn't concern me as much. Thing is, there are plenty of horrible games on Genesis, but the sheer size of its library makes that fact less significant. Dreamcast, on the other hand, really didn't have very many bad games in the U.S., giving it a very respectable good game to bad game ratio. Now, if you check back to any of my statements against buying an Xbox 360, then you'd find that they were either centered around the reliability of the console (at the time) and the fact that I could get practically every game that I wanted on PC. Thing is, there are legitimately games that I can only get on Xbox 360 and want to play, or the PC versions of said games are gimped to the point of making the very idea of buying them completely impractical. Oh, by the way, how's that PlayStation 3 been treating you lately? Oops...no disc-based games? I wonder if Nintendo will offer downloads of Virtual Boy games or remakes of Virtual Boy games on their 3DS. I only played Virtual Boy a little at a time, first at in-store kiosks when it was new, and then at the Midwest Gaming Classic. It would be fun to get to play the games.

I had one and liked it quite a bit (some of the games really were pretty good), but I think Nintendo will always try to distance themselves from the VB. It's their one HUGE failure... I always thought that a version of Tempest would have been great on the VB. Maybe on the 3DS... -------------------- |
