I mentioned before this is not some standard cable.

You can cobble together cables/adaptors or whatever to get a 3 row HD 15 pin on one side, and a 25 pin on the other. That wont work. And you do run the risk of damaging something on your Jag, or possibly PC. If you really think you have it, use a volt meter in diode checker or resistance reading modes to verify each wire listed on the BJL diagram goes to only the ones it is suppose to.

If you buy that BJL adaptor that somebody sells online (it is a little dongle that plugs into the Jag port 2 and gives you a 25 connector on the other side) you can just use a 25 pin straight through extension cable to go to your PC. That is because he has done the BJL wiring inside the adaptor.

If you want to make your own you need 12 or 15 conductor shielded cable (you need 11 wires, but usually 12 and 15 conductor is the magic number you will see), you need a 25 pin D type male connector, and a 15 pin High Density D type connector.

Here are some radio shack part numbers

15 Pin HD D type = 276-1501 = $1.89

25 Pin D Type = 276-1547 = $1.89

You just need the shielded cable then. Jameco sells about 25 feet of 15 conductor shielded cable for $14 or so. Not sure if Radio Shack carries anything else.

Just solder the wires on each end as per the diagram posted by someone else (I believe in this thread).

Okay but I don't have money so I'm not buying someone else's adaptor, even if it's only $20. How do I know what cable is shielded? I should be able to take some of the adapters I have apart and follow the wiring diagram.

Well if you have a printer cable you can chop up it is generally shielded.

Here is a pic of a shielded cable. You can see the silver wrapper that wraps around all the cables that is the shield.

IPB Image

Here is a wikipedia entry on shielded cable.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shielded_cable

If you can verify that you have shielded cable with enough conductors for the cable, and have the 2 connectors for each end you should be good to go.

Wire as detailed in this pic.

Seems like all the info anyone would need is here.

If the diagrams I made up are correct and the cable corresponds, I think I have what I need to run BJL. I'd like to have my brother look at it before I hook the cable up to my Jaguar. I'm sure he has a volt meter. Harley Techs know best. cool.gif

Im having the same problems. The checksums are different and then it just hangs saying waiting for upload. My cable is only 1 meter. Ive tried the windows XP loaders and Ive tried the 98 loaders. I have windows 98 running in virtual PC. Windows 98 is the one that works with the upload but bad checksums. XP doesnt upload at all.

Make sure you don't have any wires wrong. I believe if you have data line or two crossed you can get transfers, but the checksums don't match.

I wouldn't trust a Virtual Win98 to manage the signals right, BJL doesn't quite conform to normal use of the parallel port.

use this XP version of BJL instead. You'll need to look up the address of your parallel port in device manager if it's not at default and then use "-p 0x<port>" in the command line. For example, I can upload using my PCI parallel port with:

bjlxp -p 0xac00 file.cof

My PCI parallel port card reports two ports, A800 and AC00, I just tried one, then the other, to work out which one to use in the first place. wink.gif Normally the port is like 0x378.

Works most of the time, sometimes it goes nuts and I have to reset and try again, but I'd say that's 1 in 20. wink.gif Having a reset button is handy for that. Also be aware that it's possible for the PC to partially power the Jaguar when you turn it off, depending on the last data transmitted. If you need to reboot the machine and it doesn't come up right, try pulling the cable with the power off, then putting it back in.

Sorry that I don't have the full archive with all the credits - I just pulled this out of my bin folder. I believe I got the original archive here somewhere, long time ago! smile.gif I believe this came from the French devs originally (hmm.. I might have got it on one of those forums, in fact... there was one I visited a few times for tech notes) and it includes the necessary code to open the IO port itself - you don't need UserPort to use it.

(edit) Found the proper archive, this includes source and readme. The proper program is in 'Release' and it also requires the 'inpout32.dll' to be in the same folder - just move that DLL and bjlxp.exe into your Bin folder for use.

From posts made elsewhere, its apparent YB games still hasn't got this to work yet.

T2K, just go to a second hand store or goodwill and you guys pick up an older system for dirt cheap. Put windows 95 or 98 on it. Forget trying to use XP and DOSbox and all that other crap.

I finally got my BJL to work. I used to lo_inp with xp. I had to set to upload to 4bit and use the -n switch on the upload command. Theres a text file that comes with the lo_inp that says how the port should be setup in xp.
